How to Meet People in a New City

According to the US Census Bureau 1 in 5 people move each year. When you consider the entire US population, that’s a lot of people. As a moving company in Nashville, we see our fair share of people moving in and out of the city on a monthly basis. People move for all sorts of reason whether it be for a job, marriage, being close to elderly parents, etc. Among all of these people moving, one common struggle remains. How do you get to know people in your new city? We have some ideas.

Join Meetup.com.

Meetup.com is an online social platform where you join groups associated with various special interests. In larger cities you can find 100s of meetups that meet and get together over a shared interest. A quick look around their website and you will find meetups for every interest you could think of. Groups meet practically anywhere such as local eateries, libraries, coffee shops, parks, etc. The best thing about the site is that it’s free to join these groups. Match your hobbies with the corresponding group and you have access automatic to get togethers all around town.

Join a Fitness Class/Join a Gym.

If you’re a health nut, what better way to get to know other health nuts than to take a fitness class or join a gym? Gym memberships are incredibly affordable and once you start a routine you’ll start to see the same faces. This is a great way to stay fit as well as meet others with a similar interest.

Are you religious? Go to Church.

Churches have a way of bringing the community together. Not only will you be encouraged spiritually, but you will get to know others who are looking for the same thing. Establishing a strong support system is an added benefit of being a part of a local fellowship. Churches also offer ministries to bring together people with similar interests such as Singles Ministry, Young Adults Ministry, Marriage Ministry, Women’s Ministry, and the list goes on.

Volunteer.

There are so many opportunities to get involved in your community by volunteering. Some ideas include joining the PTA at your child’s school, volunteering at your local performing arts theater, work a soup kitchen, help write resumes at a community center, or simply getting involved with habitat for humanity. Being a part of your community in this way creates unique opportunities to meet new people from all walks of life.

Use your dog or your child and attend Dog Parks and Play Groups.

Most large cities have dog parks. One lady we know met and built long lasting relationships after first meeting at a dog park. Dogs have a way of breaking the ice and so do young children. Most cities also have play groups where parents bring their children to parks and the parents end up getting to know each other while their children play.

It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, there’s always a place for you in the community. Each person is unique and we all have a lot to offer our neighborhoods and communities. You have to be proactive if you want to meet new people, but the rewards are long lasting.
