Furniture assembly can be a hair pulling experience for some. For others, it can provide a healthy mix of challenge and fun. Ultimately, everyone can agree that assembling IKEA furniture requires patience and a lot of illustration interpreting. It doesn’t take rocket science but it can pose some difficulty. So we took to the interwebs looking for IKEA furniture assembly hack ideas and here’s what we found.

Start your Own Little IKEA Assembly Factory

If you have a lot of the same kind of pieces (a few chairs, a set of drawers), do it assembly line style. Do the same step to each thing over and over, you'll find it goes much faster. It’s easy to remember what goes where, and the assembly process is streamlined.

Separate and count small hardware pieces ahead of time. Then organize them in ice trays for easy access.

Avoid Damage

IKEA furniture is not known for toughness. So dial down resistance on power screwdrivers so that you don’t damage anything by using too much force.

Use a rubber mallet instead of a hammer to avoid knicking your furniture. If you don't have a rubber mallet, you can also tightly wrap a fuzzy rag a few times around a regular hammer and secure it with a rubber band or duct tape. Instant soft hammer!

Put a rug under loose assembly pieces as well as the underneath your work area to protect the floor from heavy furniture. If you don't have a rug, use a box from a larger item.

For added longevity, reinforce all joints, dowels, etc with wood glue. On outdoor pieces, add brass corner supports on the inside of all the legs (available from the local hardware store).

Avoid Hassle & Burnout

KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS. If you wind up with missing pieces, it’s good to have your receipt in hand to get problems reconciled faster.

If you are building on hardwood floors, make use of knee pads to protect those knees.

If you are planning to buy an item, take a picture of it already assembled while you are still on the showroom floor. It will help you remember how the finished product is supposed to look.

It’s always best to assemble a piece in the same area you’re planning on installing it. If not, you may run into a problem if the assembled piece is too large or too heavy to transport.

Wrap elastic bands around allen wrenches to help you keep a good solid grip as you turn and tighten.

Pre drill cabinet doors and drawers for handles before assembly to save time.

Always keep the instructions. That way, if you lose any parts or move, or need to rearrange the installation you will have a reference.

Check YouTube to see if there are others who have completed assembly of your particular piece. Seeing what others have done before tackling your own project can save you a lot of time and hassle.

In conclusion, there are many things you can do to ease the process of furniture assembly. Thinking ahead is key to identifying potential problem points that may arise. But also taking a practical common sense approach save the day.
