5 Tips for Moving Seniors

Moving house and home is stressful. There are some factors that make moving even more stressful. One of those factors is moving senior citizens. If you are faced with helping an elderly parent downsize or move, you likely have a lot of work ahead of you anywhere from eliminating unneeded things to moving an entire home of valuables from one place to another. In moving senior citizens here are 5 tips that can help the process go smoothly…

Come Up With A Game Plan.

The first thing you’ll need to do is get on the same page with your senior. They may not be ready to move. They may have trouble making progress with the move. Or they may be too overwhelmed to be cooperative. The best thing to do is create a strategy that allows your senior to be involved as much or as little as they want to. The plan should consist of a moving timeline, what items will stay or go, and who will do what. Whether it’s just you or you have a team working with you, everyone needs to know who is responsible for what tasks.

Start With The Easy Things First

The best packing strategy when it comes to moving is to start with rooms that aren’t used as often. For example, if you have a den that’s only used for family get-togethers, start packing that room up first. You likely won’t need these items between now and the big move. Plus, this room will be a great storage room for other boxes later. Additionally, go through the house and start getting rid of items that will not go to the new place. That way you’ll be creating more space for storing boxes.

Start Early

Another thing you can do to make the move easier is to start early. Time is on your side when you have a lot of it. We recommend starting the packing process at least two weeks in advance of the move. This will give you ample time to pack everything without the extra stress of a time crunch. Also, be wise with your time! Set aside a time each day to work on the packing and organizing. Work your way through the entire house by doing a little each day. This spreads the work out over a period of time allowing you to get everything done with a level of comfort and convenience.

Get Rid of As Much Stuff as Possible

When it comes to moving seniors, the job also tends to involve some amount of downsizing. Whether you host a yard sale or give away items to Goodwill, downsizing can be a task of its own. We recommend making a list of all the items you intend to give away and start with friends and family. Offer to give the items to anyone who wants to come by and pick them up. This makes it easy for you because you don’t have to worry about transporting those particular items. Whatever is leftover, you can either schedule a Goodwill drop-off/pick-up or host a yard sale. Depending on what type of items you have, you may be able to work with an estate sale company to oversee a sale.

Hire Help

The best thing you can do for yourself and your senior is to hire help on a job like this. With all the downsizing, packing, and moving a professional crew can take a big load off of you and help make this move as smooth as possible. You’ll save a lot of time and stress. Plus, you can find affordable moving help that will make it worth your while.
