Safety Precautions to Take on Your Big Moving Day

Moving house is a large undertaking that often requires the entire family and a little help from friends. It can be a fun and joyous occasion to leave one home and move into another whether it be bigger or smaller. It can also be a little dangerous. Taking these precautions while moving can avoid sustaining personal injuries and can even save a life.

The most popular injuries of all as it relates to moving are back injuries. Picking up and pushing heavy objects can be very detrimental to your back if you’re not careful. You can put too much stretch on your muscles and cause soreness, throw your back out of whack, or worse end up with a herniated disk. To avoid these injuries lift with the knees instead of the back. It’s very important to squat down to pick things up off the ground rather than bending at the waist. Also, don’t be afraid to use a back brace which will provide added support to your back. If something is too heavy to lift up on your own ask a moving partner to help. Don’t force yourself to go it alone.

Proper Attire

Broken toes and fingers are common among moving day injuries.

Wear closed-toe shoes! Avoid broken toes by wearing a good pair of sneakers to protect your toes. Also, make sure the shoes you wear have adequate grip. Specifically with wood flooring, it’s easy to lose balance and slip. Imagine the pain if you were to slip while carrying one end of a sofa. Ouch!

Similarly, a good pair of protective gloves can soften the brunt of objects bearing down on your hands. Always keep a watchful eye on your toes and fingers to ensure they stay out of the line of fire. Keep your hands clear of door frames including those on vehicles.

Be sure to wear clothing that will cover most of your skin such as long pants with a heavy or rugged material. This will help keep your skin projected from cuts and scrapes.

Communication is Key

Discuss the plan of attack when you are carrying an object with a partner. Plan out who will take the lead, what path you will take, and how you will maneuver the object around. This way you will avoid having to shuffle around when you are in the middle of carrying something big.

Be especially careful when it comes to stairs. Move down and up stairs slowly. It is too easy to sprain ankles with just one misstep. Make sure your moving partner is going at a pace you feel comfortable with and pay attention to your feet while moving large items.

Stay Fueled and Hydrated

Pack snacks for you and your moving team so everyone can maintain adequate energy levels. Also, drink lots of water. All that moving around will leave you dehydrated if you don’t counteract it by drinking extra water. It’s important to make sure your system is working at full cylinder so your body won’t burn out.

Clear Pathways

Avoid running into or tripping over items by clearing your path. What might seem like a non-factor can quickly become a huge obstacle when you are trying to carry a large sofa around it. Take the time to plot out your movements and clear anything out of the way that could become an obstacle.

Get Help When Needed

There may be a few items that are too large or that you simply don’t want to move. In that case, you may want to consider hiring a professional mover to assist.
